Picklers Park Roodepoort hosts first annual open tournament
The fast-growing sport continues to gain momentum as players compete in Picklers Park's inaugural open tournament.
Picklers Park Roodepoort hosted its first annual Open Tournament, bringing together players and supporters for a day of competitive pickleball and community spirit.
About 24 teams participated in the tournament, with players playing in doubles and showcasing their skills in what has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the area.
Although pickleball is still relatively new to the community, the sport has seen remarkable growth over the past year, attracting players of all ages and skill levels to the courts.
Community manager Ray Cassim said the tournament marked an important step in the development of pickleball locally.
“It’s incredible to see how much pickleball has grown in such a short space of time. A year ago, very few people knew about the sport, and today we were able to host our first annual tournament with fantastic participation and support.
“Over the year, we have been doing a lot of introduction sessions to pickleball, and we are finding that there’s a substantial amount of people that are coming in and actually enjoying the sport,” Cassim said.
The standard of play was outstanding, and the players spent the whole day challenging each other while also sharing the spirit of camaraderie.
“Picklers Park is all about community development, and we used this opportunity to couple the tournament with a flea market to allow local businesses to showcase their products.”
In the Gold League, Shane du Bois and Jandre Erasmus claimed first place, followed by Caden Dalais and Ruan Lategan in second, while CA and Rudy Froneman secured third place.
The Silver League title went to Ruben and Garret Ceronio, with Raees Barnes and Wayne Fitzgibbon finishing as runners-up. Terryn Visser and Mark Peace rounded off the podium in third place.
In the Bronze League, Chris Fourie and Nigel Wurayayi took top honours. Fred Beyl and Trevor Bissett earned second place, while Jensen Crichton and Evan Smith finished third.
