Honeydew CPF celebrates Mandela Day in spirit of giving
67 Minutes turned into hours of giving as the Honeydew CPF joined hands with police, JMPD and community partners to restore hope and warmth in Zandspruit.
The Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF), in partnership with the Honeydew police, brought hope and essential services to residents during a Mandela Day community outreach at the Emthojeni Centre on Friday, July 17.
Held under the theme ’67 Minutes of Service – Making Every Minute Count’, the event reflected the enduring legacy of former President Nelson Mandela by encouraging collective action and service to those most in need.
According to Honeydew CPF public relations officer Michael Steyn, the initiative united government departments, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations and the private sector to provide practical support while promoting safer, healthier and more resilient communities.
Throughout the morning, residents accessed a range of free services, including medical screenings, community safety awareness programmes and educational demonstrations by the police’s 10111 Specialised Unit, the K9 Unit and the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services. Partner organisations also showcased the services and support available to community members.
“One of the day’s highlights was the Mandela Day Giving Initiative, during which blankets, food hampers, beanies, gloves, juice packs and other essential items were distributed to elderly residents and children in need. A community soup drive further ensured that families received a warm meal while interacting with the various service providers,” said Steyn.
The event also demonstrated the value of partnerships in addressing social and safety challenges. Through the combined efforts of government departments, law enforcement agencies, businesses, community organisations and volunteers, residents accessed resources and support that contribute to their overall well-being.
Community members who attended the event received food parcels and other donated items.

The Zandspruit community continues to honour Mandela Day through acts of service. The Honeydew CPF’s outreach served as a reminder that meaningful change is achieved when communities work together to uplift the most vulnerable and create a safer, stronger future for all.
