Sports festivals set to spark joy across Joburg schools this Easter

KES, St John’s and St Stithians prepare to host a week of fun, family, and fierce competition from April 16 to 21.

Anticipation and excitement are in the air as learners, parents, athletes and schools prepare for the upcoming sports school festivals this Easter weekend.

Hosted by three prestigious Johannesburg schools namely King Edward VII School (KES), St John’s College and St Stithians College, the sports festivals will be held between April 16 and April 21.

Expected to be a sports extravaganza the festivals will attract fans and schools from far and wide.
Like any other private or public event, attendees are expected to abide by the rules of each school’s festival.

This must be done to ensure that everyone has fun and that a positive and respectful environment can be created.

Sharing insight into some of the sports festivals’ dos and don’ts KES’ marketing and events director Derron van Eeden emphasised that attendees should behave as they would at any other school or public function.

She said no cooler boxes containing food or drinks should be brought to the venue.
Instead, spectators can refresh themselves with beverages and fuel up on meals by supporting vendors during the festival.

While cheering for teams, guests are encouraged to be mindful of the amount of noise they create. This might be distracting referees, players and spectators.

No vuvuzelas or whistles should be used, external Bluetooth speakers are not allowed either.
Additionally, spectators should remain silent when a rugby player is kicking for a conversion.

When cheering and supporting spectators and fans should do so in a positive and encouraging to create a supportive environment.
Supporters must refrain from making negative remarks or bad-mouthing about learners, coaches and referees.

Van Eeden said heckling and jeering of any kind is not tolerated.

Although each festival will have dedicated photographers, community members and spectators can take their own photographs. However, when doing so, attendees should be considerate of spectators and ongoing games.

Do not stand on the field or interrupt the game to get the perfect shot.
While at the festivals guests are reminded to make the event enjoyable for everyone by being considerate to others.
Do not obstruct the view of other spectators and be considerate when moving between fellow spectators.

While at the festivals community members are reminded to respect others and the venue.

All litter and rubbish should be disposed of responsibly

By adhering to these basic guidelines, spectators and guests can foster a positive spirit and atmosphere at the festivals, not doing so could lead to attendees being escorted offsite by security.
