Poorte builds future rugby champions

Roodepoort Rugby Club welcomes new registrations for their youth academy programme.

Roodepoort Rugby Club (Poorte) is making a meaningful impact in the community through its Build Future Champions Youth Academy; a programme focused on developing young rugby players while shaping responsible and disciplined individuals.

According to Poorte’s chairperson Juan Cornelius, the academy was created from the club’s belief that rugby is more than just a sport. He believes it is a platform to teach life skills, build character, and create opportunities for young athletes who are passionate about the game.

“This programme welcomes young players from as young as six years old, where the emphasis is on fun, participation and learning the fundamentals of rugby. At this early stage, players are introduced to important movement skills, ball handling, passing and teamwork,” said Cornelius.

“Our main goal is to develop well-rounded athletes by focusing on rugby fundamentals, personal discipline, and strong values. We aim to nurture talent, encourage a love for the game, and prepare players to compete confidently at higher levels while representing the club and their community with pride,” he explained.

Poorte training is based on age categories, and becomes more structured and focused on key rugby skills as players get older. Coaches work closely with young athletes to improve passing accuracy, tackling technique, ball control, spatial awareness and decision-making on the field.

As they advance, players are introduced to game strategy, fitness conditioning and positional understanding to prepare them for more competitive rugby.

Beyond the technical aspects of the game, the academy places a strong emphasis on discipline, teamwork and personal development. Players are encouraged to respect their coaches and teammates, show commitment during training sessions and take responsibility for their actions – both on and off the field. Mentorship from experienced coaches and senior players helps young athletes build confidence while developing a strong sense of team culture.

Players in the academy have the opportunity to progress through the club’s junior structures (U6–U18) and into senior teams at Roodepoort Rugby Club.

“Talented players can also be identified for provincial structures and higher-level competitions, providing a pathway for those who wish to pursue rugby at an elite level,” Cornelius added.

Cornelius said the success of the programme is also supported by the involvement of parents and the wider community, which creates a positive environment where young players feel supported in their development. Volunteers, supporters and community partnerships play an important role in strengthening the club’s rugby culture.

Poorte plans to continue expanding the academy and continue to nurture talented players and future leaders in the community.
