SANBS celebrates Mandela Month

SANBS turns Mandela Day into Mandela Month, to be celebrated by donations.

With 18 July – Mandela Day – celebrated, more people and even bigger companies are driven not only to save lives but to transform lives for the better.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) aspires to achieve their goal as expressed in their slogan “Take action, Inspire change. Make every day Mandela Day.” In support of Mandela Day, they have adopted July as Mandela Month and the aim is to encourage selflessness as well as a healthy lifestyle for all.

SANBS supports the main purpose of the 67 minutes initiative, however they also believe that one’s actions should last for more than one day. With blood donations as their primary objective, the organisation strives to continue making a difference in the lives of others.

On 20 July SANBS along with a few other organisations such as the SPCA, Johannesburg Child Welfare, Sunflower Fund, Devine Light and the Organ Donor Foundation will be hosting a charity event. The event will start at 9am until 4pm at Brightwater Commons. The organisation is calling on everyone to donate blood on the day.

To become a blood donor you need to weigh more than 50kg, and must have eaten a healthy meal before your donation. You also have to be between the ages of 16 and 65, and leading a sexually safe lifestyle is most important to be eligible to donate should you wish to do so.

For more information visit www.sanbs.org.za or call 0800 119031. Support a local blood donation centre by visiting the Fairlands Donor Centre on Beacon Road, Florida North. They can be contacted on 011 670 8600.
