JMPD arrests armed motorist after alleged road rage incident

The incident serves as a reminder that losing your temper on the road can have serious consequences.

A motorist was arrested after allegedly pointing a firearm at another driver during a road rage incident on Hendrik Potgieter Road on Sunday, July 12.

According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, Tactical Response Unit (TRU) officers were conducting routine patrols on Hendrik Potgieter Road, near Jim Fouché Road, when they witnessed the incident.

Fihla said officers saw the driver of a hatchback lean out of the vehicle and allegedly point a firearm at the driver of another hatchback travelling behind him.

“The officers immediately intervened, stopped the Suzuki Swift and secured the firearm,” said Fihla.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Honeydew Police Station, where he will undergo further legal processing.

Fihla urged motorists to remain calm when confronted with conflict on the road, warning that road rage can quickly escalate into criminal conduct.

“Road rage can have devastating consequences. Motorists are urged to remain calm and exercise restraint when faced with conflict on the road. Resorting to threats or violence is a criminal offence and will be met with decisive law enforcement action,” he said.

He added that the JMPD remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and will not tolerate reckless or violent behaviour on Johannesburg’s roads.
