Book sale boosts animal rescue fundraiser
The day was more than just about books; it allowed residents to make meaningful contributions towards the welfare of animals in need.
Book and animal lovers gathered in support of the Paws and Purrs Rescue at a fundraising book sale on Saturday, July 4, aimed at helping the organisation continue caring for rescued animals.
The sale featured a variety of books, bookmarks and CDs, with proceeds going towards the rescue’s daily operations. Visitors were also encouraged to donate essential items, including cleaning supplies and wet food for cats and dogs.
Speaking at the event, Paws and Purrs Rescue representative Lexi Lines said the organisation relies on community support to continue its work.
“We’re a pro-life rescue and sanctuary, so we only take in puppies, kittens and farm animals when they’re babies. They grow up with us and, if they’re ready to be adopted, they move on to their new homes. If they don’t find a home, or if they have health issues that prevent them from being adopted, they stay with us forever and live long, happy lives,” Lexi said.

She explained that Paws and Purrs Rescue is now based on a farm in Hekpoort and has officially been operating for almost five years, with its fifth anniversary set to be celebrated in November.
“I’ve been doing rescue work since I was 16,” she added.
Lexi also acknowledged the efforts of community members who helped make the fundraiser possible.
“Gillian and John McIntyre graciously collected books for the past couple of months and then arranged all of this,” she said.
Gillian brought two suitcases full of books from the United Kingdom.
“My mother gave me books, and I had to travel with them from Manchester. I have also adopted two adorable dogs from the animal shelter,” she said, who also opened up her house to host the event.
The rescue continues to need donations of cleaning supplies, as well as wet food for cats and dogs, to help care for the animals at its sanctuary. Looking ahead, Lexi said she hoped the community would rally behind the fundraiser.
“I really do hope that people come out and support and bring some tinned food. I also hope that we manage to sell all the books today. That would be fantastic,” she said.
Funds raised from the event will help the rescue provide food, shelter and ongoing care for the animals in its care while supporting its rescue and adoption efforts.
