The Northcliff Rotary Club has completed cleaning and repairing the damaged septic tank in Zandspruit, said the club’s Ansie Hibberd, who has been monitoring the process.

The tank is situated at the Emthonjeni Centre in Zandspruit and provides water to the community.

“It is done and functioning properly again. No more sewage is running all over. This is a project that I have been wanting to do for 18 months because this informal settlement has a growing water need,” said Hibberd.

The Northcliff Rotary Club has appointed Calcamite Sanitary Services as the service provider to the Zandspruit Emthonjeni Water and Sanitation Project. The Emthonjeni Community Centre was established over ten years ago to work alongside the local community to meet their basic needs.

This initiative will help improve the lives of the more than 70 000 people residing in Zandspruit.

“We wanted to solve the existing sewage problem. Now we just want to make it attractive by adding gravel and garden stone. We also want to put benches there,” said Hibberd.

The final phase of the project will create a food garden in order to feed Zandspruit’s residents.

“Garden training and education will further create funds for the community,” Hibberd concluded.
