Car thief escapes through a manhole.

One of the  Jeep thieves fled through a manhole after crashing the get-away Lexus.

According to Captain Lydia Dikolomela of the Florida SAPS, the Lexus used in the robbery (Friday 4 July) was involved in a high-speed chase with police. Eventually the panicked driver crashed into a ditch in Helderberg Road, abandoned the car, and then scurried through a manhole to evade police.

In the Lexus police found a large amount of house and car keys, some Allen keys, immobilisers, gate remotes police believe are used to jam car remote signals, screwdrivers, wheel spanners, a laptop, several bank cards from different banks and two cellphones.

Police also will pursue a charge of reckless driving in addition to the robbery charge when the suspect is apprehended.
