Ten more councillors for Joburg after elections

An extra ward to be added to Region C after elections.

After the coming municipal elections have taken place, the City of Johannesburg will have 10 more councillors to aid residents.

The number of elected councillors in Johannesburg will increase by 10, from the current 260 to the maximum 270, according to a CoJ press statement.

According to Gert Niemand, Ward 71 councillor and DA campaign manager for Region C, the area will get at least one more ward after the elctions. Ward 131 will be added to Region C’s list, which comprises of Cosmo City, specifically Kya Sands, Inadan AH, Bloubosrand, Maroeladal, Craigavon AH, Cedar Lakes and Fourways Gardens.

He said the addition, which was a decision made by the Municipal Demarcation Board in 2015, will mean the area gets at least one more ward councillor and at least one more PR councillor.

“The decision means Johannesburg will get five more ward councillors and five more PR councillors added to its list,” Niemand said.

The decision was made to reflect the city’s growing population.

“The move will bring the number of directly elected ward councillors to 135.

“The other 135 councillors will take their seats in the legislature via the proportional representation system,” CoJ in a press statement said.

Although the date has not yet been set for the municipal elections this year, it is widely expected to take place in the second quarter of the year. The previous municipal elections were held on 18 May 2011.

The elections will have an impact on the city’s calendar as the Johannesburg Executive Mayor Councillor Parks Tau will deliver his fifth annual State of the City Address (Soca) ahead of the vote.

It is particularly important that residents who have turned 18 since the 2014 national elections as well as those who had moved residences since check their registration to vote with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

CoJ residents are encouraged to check the status of their registration to vote on the IEC’s website at www.elections.org.za or to phone its helpline on 0800 11 8000.
