Put your bin out the normal time

Collection schedules to be adhered to, things to normalise soon, says Pikitup spokesperson.

Now that the illegal strike of Pikitup employees affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) is over, many wonder when things will normalise.

According to spokesperson Jacky Mashapu, scheduled collections should return to normal in the next month. Samwu-affiliated employees returned to work on Monday morning (11 April) but now have the added work of clearing waste and illegal dumping hot spots created during the strike.

“We anticipate that the recovery plan will take over three weeks to complete since, in most instances, the normal operations will be slowed due to the excess waste which has accumulated for five weeks,” he said in a press statement.

Mashapu urges residents to continue putting out their bins, and any excess waste in refuse bags, according to their normal collection schedule. He emphasised the urgency of identifying all illegal dumping spots to get the city back to a decent state. Residents can contribute by reporting illegal dumping sites to a 24-hour hotline, 011 286 6009, or to download the JRA Find & Fix application on the Google Play Store and report it via the application.
