Surveillance cameras to keep suburbs safe

STRUBEN’S VALLEY – Cameras are expected to capture any suspicious activity and transgression of laws in the suburbs.

The recently installed CCTV cameras are expected to curb the scourge of crime and eradicate suspicious activities in Little Falls and Struben’s Valley suburbs.

An initiative by Little Falls and Struben’s Valley Residential Community (LIFCO) was finally launched recently and more cameras are expected to be installed at the end of April.

LIFCO chairperson Reg Mazibuko said that monitored cameras would help identify and provide proof of any illegal activities in these suburbs.

“We believe that days of reactive response to crime are gone. A proactive response is the future of private security. Technology is used as part of the proactive response, hence we decided to have cameras installed at key intersections,” he explained.

The idea behind this project is to ensure that any vehicle going to these suburbs would pass a minimum of two cameras.

The cameras installed at the entrances of Cascades and Fredenharry have licence-plate-recognition software. “This will enable us to have any flagged cars immediately noticed by the monitoring centre, as their number plates will be logged onto the system,” he mentioned.

Cameras are currently installed at the Cascades entrance from Hendrik Potgieter at the corner of Draaikolk Avenue and Cascades Road, corner Victoria and Cascades roads, corner Mac-Mac and Cascade roads, Witwatersrand Street at the greenbelt area and Fredenharry Road at the BP garage entrance.

The other camera was installed at the Eagles View Guest House to monitor the mountain.

Residents are also encouraged to organise with their neighbours for cameras to be installed in their area. Lifco has negotiated with its hardware suppliers to make this service more affordable.
