Railway veteran Neusol ‘Soon’ Klee passes away at 90

He turned his lifelong love of trains into a passion for crafting intricate model locomotives, leaving behind a legacy of skill, dedication and kindness.

Model train builder Neusol ‘Soon’ Klee has sadly passed away a day after his 90th birthday.

Klee passed away in the early hours of October 7, which was also his birthday, following complications after an operation. His son, Juan Klee, confirmed the devastating news to the Roodepoort Record.

According to Juan, his father spent two weeks in the intensive care unit after developing an infection that spread to his lungs. Despite receiving treatment, the infection did not improve, and his heart eventually stopped.

Klee’s passing marks the end of a remarkable life in which his love for trains extended far beyond his 44-year career with the railways.

He recently shared his passion for building model train locomotives with the Record, reflecting on a craft he had gained while working at the railways. He was also featured on the popular kykNET programme Kwêla as part of its collaboration with the Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch’s Love Your Neighbourhood series, which celebrates interesting and inspiring community members.

For Klee, retirement did not mean putting his passion aside. Instead, it meant bringing the railway from the tracks into his living room.

His fascination with trains began in childhood while growing up in Heidelberg, just two blocks from the railway line. He and his older brother would spend hours sitting beside the tracks, watching trains pass by. At the time, he could not have imagined that nearly two decades later, he would be working for the railways himself.

Klee and his family later moved to Volksrust, where they lived on farms. It was there that his interest in model building began, initially through making small boats while surrounded by dams and streams.

After getting married, he continued collecting various items, including boats and James Bond memorabilia. His passion for model building eventually grew into a lifelong pursuit.

Over the years, he had built about 10 to 11 large models and accumulated around 15 Märklin train sets.

His years of experience working on the railways provided the knowledge and inspiration behind his intricate locomotive models, allowing him to recreate the trains that had captured his imagination as a child.

Beyond his craftsmanship, Klee will also be remembered by his family for his willingness to help others, his love of conversation and his faith.

“I will remember him as a very busy person, always available to help, loved talking and loved religion. He taught me a lot of skills and guided and supported me always,” said Juan.

Klee’s service is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at Martin’s Chapel, where he will be cremated.
