Camera delays explained
WELTEVREDEN PARK – Panorama Residents Association addresses camera roll-out delays.
The delays for camera installations in the Panorama Residents Association precinct have been addressed by the committee during a forum meeting held at Panorama Primary School on 28 March.
Due to crime escalating in parts of Weltevreden Park, the residents under the association were hoping for a speed up in the project, however certain technicalities and paperwork resorted to the delays.
Chairman of the committee Jon Rosenberg stated that they have been waiting for fibre in the area, and to accumulate enough money to erect high-quality infrared cameras capable of both day and night vision, with clearly recognisable face and vehicle registration plates.
A committee member Khumbulani Mpofu, explained the delays.
“Initially the plan was to put up our own cameras. When Vumatel came in to lay down the fibre, they said they will [provide] the fibre but they want to be endorsed by the Panorma Residents Association,” he said.
“One of the conditions for the endorsement was [Vumatel] would help [the association] to put up cameras for us to increase the visibility of surveillance, security and reduce crime.”
Mpofu told Roodepoort Northsider that Vumatel was quite happy to give them an allocation of 25 locations but came back to them to say that they will be putting cameras wherever they have installed fibre.
“[They said] they were launching a programme to put cameras. [The programme would] become a network of cameras that sits on the fibre for pretty much the whole of Johannesburg with the condition of paying a subscription fee to them,” he explained.
He also mentioned that Vumatel was concluding talks with insurance companies to fund the rollout of cameras with the benefit to them of being able to validate claims using the cameras.
“In the next two months, they need to conclude agreements with the insurance companies who will be funding the rollout,” said Mpofu.
Rosenberg also encouraged existing members to renew their memberships, and also pleaded for more residents to join.
“Our fees are a ridiculously low R250 per annum, and the more members we have, the more cameras will be erected.”
