Police urge businesses to upgrade security

The Northsider has reported about a business robbery or a scam at a shopping centre at least twice a month recently.

The recent spate of business robberies and ATM scams at shopping centres has led Honeydew Police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan to urge all centre managers to beef up security.

Businesses in the area have been targeted almost weekly, with the Northsider reporting on a business robbery or a scam at a shopping centre at least twice in a month.

The most recent was a robbery at a liquor store and supermarket in a shopping centre on Christiaan De Wet Road, in September. The robberies occurred on the same day, and the suspects fled the scene with stolen goods and money.

“Shopping centres need to improve systems in order to safeguard their patrons by installing surveillance cameras and beefing up security in hotspots,” Muthan explained.

Bentel Group, the owners of Retail Crossing Shopping Centre recently cautioned shoppers about ATM scams.

Carina Pienaar from the company warned the public not to accept any assistance from strangers or allow any person access to their bank cards or PINs.
