WATCH: Today in History: Carlos Brathwaite smashes Ben Stokes for four sixes to win the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 final
In the final of the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 competition, West Indies' Carlos Brathwaite belted four consecutive sixes in the final over to win the tournament in emphatic fashion.
In what is quite possibly the greatest ever finish to a cricket match, the West Indies became the first nation to win two ICC World Twenty20 titles.
The build-up to the tournament was marred by the West Indian pay dispute. West Indies captain, Darren Sammy, had exchanged letters with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), expressing his concerns regarding the payment players were due to receive for taking part in the tournament.
Sammy went on to say that “… we want to play and will represent the West Indies to the best of our abilities”.
Despite the pay dispute, Sammy and the A-string West Indies side travelled to India in search of their second World Twenty20 title.
The West Indies and England clashed in the first match of the tournament, with the West Indies emerging victorious by six wickets with 11 balls to spare.
After their loss to the West Indies, England beat South Africa with the highest successful run chase (229) in World Twenty20 history before beating Afghanistan and then Sri Lanka to reach the semi-final, where they defeated a strong New Zealand side.
After prevailing against England, the West Indies defeated Sri Lanka in a rematch of the 2012 final and then ousted South Africa. They suffered an upset loss to Afghanistan in their final group match. They defeated India in the semi-final, chasing down a mammoth target of 193 with two balls to spare.
The final started off with West Indies winning the toss against England and electing to field, which seemed to pay off when they grabbed the wicket of Jason Roy after only two balls.
This didn’t deter the rest of the English batsmen however, as they managed to fight back 24/3 to reach a modest total of 155/9 in their allotted 20 overs. The West Indies’ run chase got off to the worst possible start when they found themselves at 11/3 after 2.3 overs.
A 75-run partnership between Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Bravo revived their hopes, but they still found themselves requiring 45 runs from the last four overs.
Tight bowling from England meant West Indies needed 19 off the final over to clinch it.
Incredible batting from Carlos Brathwaite ensued, as he belted Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes off the first four balls of the over to win the match for the West Indies.
Brathwaite finished on 34 off 10 balls as Samuels claimed man of the match for his stellar 85 off 66 balls
