Christiaan de Wet Road repairs completed

The repairs included the reconstruction of layer works that were compromised, and the installation of a gabion basket retaining structure to ensure stability.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has reopened the left lane of Christiaan de Wet Road after repairs were completed on 31 May.

A section of the road behind Clearwater Shopping Mall, towards Ontdekkers Road, was closed off to traffic last month after it had collapsed due to damaged storm-water infrastructure.

Head of Infrastructure Development at JRA, Siyabonga Genu said, “The affected section of Christiaan de Wet Road has been repaired and is safe for motorists to use.”

He added that the repairs included the reconstruction of layer works that were compromised, and the installation of a gabion basket retaining structure to ensure stability.

“The plan is to install a full drainage system and rehabilitate other sections of the road that have been damaged by the water at a later stage.”

Genu said because of budget constraints, road rehabilitation may only be done next year, and explained, “The long-term plan will be included in our 2020/ 21 financial year budget for road rehabilitation. This budget has not been approved by the City yet, so we are not in position to commence with any procurement process. Once the budget is approved, we will appoint engineers to assist us with the designs, and only when designs are complete we will be able to confirm the final cost of the repairs.”

He concluded by thanking motorists for their patience despite this inconvenience.
