Local municipality structures serve as a vital cog in the machine of everyday life and in attempts to safeguard employees and customers, these structures have been experiencing intermittent closures. An increase in confirmed cases of Covid-19 is causing delays and confusion at municipal offices across the city.
The offices at the Roodepoort Motor Vehicle Registering Authority (MVRA), based at Roodepoort City Hall, have been closed for several days but are on the verge of reopening. “We are here waiting for the sanitization team and once they are done we can open the office,” said Head of Roodepoort Licencing, Mercy Kubayi.
“We have a fresh team who have not come into contact with any person with the virus and they are ready to come in,” she continued. The MVRA was set to open on 2 July, however, due to concerns raised by staff members, the date of reopening will be communicated. This is not the case with the Driver’s Licence Testing Centre (DLTC).
“We are still busy with screening and contact tracing, so we are not sure when this can reopen. We are expecting an announcement on this soon,” she confirmed.
Officials were locked in a lengthy meeting on Wednesday, 1 July, in order to discuss the current challenges and possible solutions. Customers are urged to contact the relevant office telephonically prior to arrival to confirm operational hours.
