Homeowners told to pay to have subs removed

The property owners have labelled the two heavy, tall electric boxes as an eyesore and bait for criminals.

A family in Strubens Valley that has been complaining about two mini substations that were put up outside their property is likely to end up paying to have them relocated.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena responded to the claims that they are refusing to relocate the mini subs by emphasising that relocation can only be done once the customer has paid the required amount.

The property owners have labelled the two heavy, tall electric boxes as an eyesore and bait for criminals. The two boxes were installed after an old one exploded early this year.

However, Mangena explained that the refurbishment was done at no expense to the customers to benefit all the customers on Witwatersrand Road, including the complainant.

He also made it clear that City Power did not transgress any by-law when placing the two installations.

“The complaining customer has been advised by City Power to approach the Customer Service to apply for the relocation of the Ring Main Unit (RMU) and the mini-substation, which he has done,” he said.

“The customer has further been advised to pay for a redesign of the network as relocation involves redesigning the network,” he added.

Mangena indicated that the customer has not come forward to make the payment that has to accompany her application to have the infrastructure relocated.

“It has to be emphasised that City Power does not refuse to relocate the two installations but it can do so only when the customer has met the payment requirement,” he concluded.
