Florida Park High School helps orphanage with extra warmth in winter

Parkies' craft class got their knitting needles and overlockers out and stitched together 10 blankets and several teddy bears to warm the hearts of the little orphans.

School children across the country may never have as much free time on their hands, as 2020 may see them spend more days at home than at their desks.

While some have chosen to pass the possibly unwanted extra hours on a mobile device or a book, a group of Florida Park High School learners chose to get creative for a good cause. Florida Baby House is a baby sanctuary that has been in operation since 2004 and on 18 June, they were the recipients of a blanket and teddy bear donation.

“This is a small gesture from Florida Park High School during the Covid-19 pandemic. There are many organisations and individuals who are in need during this time and as a school, we are grateful for an opportunity to be in a position to bless others,” gushed Florida Park High School’s Acting Principal, Mr QD Poley.

Parkies’ craft class got their knitting needles and overlockers out and stitched together 10 blankets and several teddy bears to warm the hearts of the little orphans. The house caters for children whose mothers are unable to care for them, but capacity as well as resources are scarce.

“We can house 13 babies, ranging from birth until two years. We have 10 children at the moment, with eight being toddlers, one one-year old and one that is just a month old,” clarified house mother, Nicky Viljoen.

Principal Poley was very pleased with the effort of his learners and the craft teacher who initiated the project, saying, “Mrs Saloshini Thevan and the Parkies craft learners epitomise the heart of Florida Park High School, and we sincerely thank them for the time, effort and love that they have put into their charitable gestures”.
