Three suspects have been arrested in Matholesville after police recovered explosives linked to alleged ATM bombings and illegal mining activities on Tuesday, September 1.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a multidisciplinary intelligence-driven operation was conducted after the West Rand Explosives Unit received information about a supplier allegedly providing explosives to individuals involved in ATM bombings, cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies and illegal mining.

The team descended on Matholesville, where two men and a woman were found.

A search of the premises resulted in the recovery of 88 safety fuses, 62 blasting cartridges and approximately 400 metres of detonating cord, with an estimated street value of R160 000.

The suspects were arrested for possession of explosives and are expected to appear in court.

A white Toyota Etios displaying false registration plates was also seized for further investigation.

The acting provincial commissioner of police in Gauteng, Major General Fred Kekana, commended the multidisciplinary team for the successful intelligence-led operation.

“ATM bombings and CIT robberies remain a serious threat in Gauteng. This operation demonstrates the importance of collaboration between police, private security and other stakeholders in disrupting organised criminal activities,” said Kekana.

Nevhuhulwi said investigations are continuing to establish possible links between the suspects and other ATM bombings, CIT robberies and illegal mining incidents.
