AfriForum Roodepoort neighbourhood watch members assist with arrest
Suspects, some of them illegal immigrants, were arrested for possession of explosives, and for cable theft.
On 20 July, the Roodepoort branch of AfriForum Neighbourhood Watch joined the police, CPF and other units on a routine patrol, during which various arrests were made.
Suspects, some of them illegal immigrants, were arrested for possession of explosives, and for cable theft. On 21 July, during another operation, another four suspects were arrested for cable theft.
Llewellynn Hemmens, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for the Northern Region chalked these successes up to the good cooperative relationship between the respective role players and said, “They successfully followed up of leads from the community and collectively devised workable plans to bring the suspects to book. The illegal immigrants will be detained until they are deported to their country of origin later this month. An investigation will be launched into the activities of the copper thieves to determine the syndicate they are involved with. The explosives, and the copper that is 100m in length and 5cm in diameter, were returned to Prasa.”
He concluded by saying, “These arrests are good examples of the results that can be achieved when communities do not stand back”.
