Westgate Shopping Centre gives back for Mandela Day

One of the former president's favourite quotes was, "There can be no greater gift than that of giving one's time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return".

The annual Mandela Day celebrations have been quite different this year with the challenges of the global Covid-19 pandemic, but that did not deter many South Africans to do their bit in honour of Madiba’s legacy.

One of the former president’s favourite quotes was, “There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return”.

Pareto Limited’s Portfolio of Shopping Centres, which includes Westgate Shopping Centre, Menlyn Park, Cresta Shopping Centre, Mimosa Mall, Southgate Mall and The Pavilion Shopping Centre, have heeded these wise words by reaching out into their feeder communities in need, particularly during this unprecedented time, to commemorate the late Madiba’s life.

The pandemic has impacted a large percentage of South Africa’s communities that have lost their income, resulting in challenges to meet basic needs. To help those in need, Westgate donated 100 food parcels through Dorcas Aid SA to the community of Princess Crossing Settlement, who are in dire need of support. They also donated clothes to the Action for Blind and Disabled Children organisation in Roodepoort, which was accepted with a grateful heart by Stephen Bergers and Wilson Nyathi.

“It has always been a concern on the part of Westgate Shopping Centre to care and acknowledge the less privileged in our area. The pandemic is causing further pressure on our disadvantaged community, hence we need to work together and support our community by utilising our resources,” said Wiley Quinn, General Manager of Westgate Shopping Centre.
