“If it wasn’t for the effects of Covid-19, we would have been out of here.”
Those were the words of the Spring Road bridge construction community liaison officer, Quinton Zulu, when he reported on the progress with the multi-million rand bridge rehabilitation project in Weltevreden Park.
This bridge was closed in 2017 when its integrity could not be guaranteed. It suffered structural damage after heavy downpours, making it a no-go area.

Zulu told Northsider about the progress that had been made since they returned to work after the shutdown during Level 1 of the lockdown.
“We have made major progress to date. We are currently busy with earthworks. And in terms of the bridge, we’ve done the deck and we are also doing the pedestrian sidewalks or crossing,” he indicated.
When asked about the completion date, Zulu indicated that at the rate they were working, they should be done with the entire project by next month, or October at the latest.
“We are trying to push for September to be out of here, but unforeseen delays, like rain, could move the deadline to October,” he said.
He added that they also need to rehabilitate the area, which includes planting grass and repairing damage to the properties that were affected.
