Young Helderkruin actress’ passion rewarded
"I wanted to create an opportunity for actors around the world to show how resilient they are."
Theatres and film sets around the world are closed for business, but this didn’t stop local actress and Laerskool Helderkruin learner Leané Nortje’s passion for performing.
The Roodepoort actress submitted an entry to the World Monologue Games, a global event with competitors from over 80 countries vying for prizes and glory, and was over the moon when she heard that she was one of only 12 competitors in the Tiger division who made it straight through to the global finals.
Leané said, “I’m so excited to be competing for my country in this amazing event. It’s an honour to be selected.”
The World Monologue Games is only in its first year but already attracted thousands of international performers. Event founder Pete Malicki from Sydney in Australia said, “Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on people’s lives, the global economy and many different industries including arts and entertainment. I wanted to create an opportunity for actors around the world to show how resilient they are. The response was massive – I’m not sure if this many actors have participated in one event before!”
Leané will be performing a piece from the movie A Little Princess, which is a 1995 American family drama directed by Alfonso Cuarón. “I really love performing this piece. It focuses on a young girl who is in a New York City boarding school, and she is trying to encourage a younger girl whose mother has recently passed,” she explained.
The Global Finals will be live-streamed in front of hundreds of thousands of performing arts fans at the end of 2020.
