Youth empowerment for girls in Peacock

According to Senkala their aim is to encourage other young women to join the club and urge others to become volunteers.

Save Life Africa based in the north of Johannesburg recently launched the Imbokodo Clan Club for girls at the Peacock informal settlement next to the Ruimsig Stadium.

The main objective of the initiative is to focus on community development and youth empowerment through sports, education and training.

“The club is one of the organisation’s portfolios and is strictly for girls between the ages of 10 and 21. The purpose of this portfolio is to create a safe space for the girls to communicate openly about issues pertaining to family matters, sexual health and breaking the cycle of poverty, among other things,” said the chairperson of Save Life Africa, Letacia Sekanka.

According to Senkala their aim is to encourage other young women to join the club and urge others to become volunteers.

The club meets every Saturday at the Ruimsig Church of God for a workshop session followed by sports activity.

During a meeting, the girls of the Peacock informal settlement explained that teenage pregnancy is one of their biggest challenges and that there are no opportunities to advance their talents.

According to the inspirational Letacia, some of the girls have medals in athletics, boxing and mathematics; they just need someone who is committed to them and will not give up on them.

“They also train during the week on their own without a coach. They have shown high dedication and determination.?I believe that with the right opportunities and resources, they can excel and reach their potential,” said Letacia.

Members of the community who would like to donate sports equipment or educational material are welcome to contact Letacia on 072 918 8401 or email letacia.sekanka@gmail.com, and Parson Gapa on 079 910 7344 or email parsgp1@gmail.com.
