Public libraries to remain closed until further notice

There has been no news on when libraries will reopen, despite lockdown moving to Level 2

The City of Johannesburg is home to 89 public libraries within their municipal reaches. With the coronavirus pandemic putting most of the world at a standstill, and the South African lockdown having stopped the operation of many businesses and services for several months, libraries have been closed since March.

Bookworms throughout Johannesburg have been wondering when they will be able to get their literary fix again; however, there has not been much news on the matter.

At the end of June, CoJ notified residents that all 89 libraries needed extensive changes in the way they operate due to the virus. “Protection and health of our users and staff are important to the City,” said the Joburg Libraries statement. These changes and the safety concerns expressed by the local government meant that all the libraries would remain closed until further notice.

In their June statement, Joburg Libraries said that all 89 facilities need to remain closed until all precautions are in place and clear regulations can be provided on how the libraries can operate.

Unfortunately, there has been no news on when libraries will reopen, despite lockdown moving to Level 2. As soon as the Record receives more information on the matter, readers will be promptly notified.

In the interim, residents can make use of the Johannesburg Library’s online collections, which can be accessed using the Libby app, which provides access to ebooks and audio books from local libraries. You can also get access to the Gauteng online collection with your individual membership number.
