Telling his hard story through music

With gender-based violence and social issues affecting his native country of Zimbabwe, VOE has planned on releasing a song focusing on those issues.

A 2018 racial-driven attack which left Monash South Africa student Simbarashe ‘Simba’ Nembaware scarred and traumatised changed his life and gave him a new purpose.

This final-year student turned rapper has started using his voice to speak creatively about social issues affecting our communities locally, and globally.
Using VOE4LIFE as his stage name in the music industry, this youngster has released some thought-provoking tracks to create awareness and conscientise the masses about socio-economic issues plaguing Africa.

Speaking about his latest offering, Simba told Northsider that he released a single titled TALK. “It’s an urban and experimental record, with punchline after punchline. In the second half of the first verse I mentioned how I was racially attacked and left with a broken jaw,” he highlighted.

In addition, the budding rapper said he used the actual images from the day of the attack in the artwork, which makes it a powerful and original piece.

“The aim of releasing this song is to raise awareness that in this day and age racial attacks are still a thing in Africa. Unlike most victims of racism (may their souls rest in peace), I survived and was able to tell my story,” he explained.

The Ruimisg resident also spoke about how being an artist works hand in hand with what he is currently studying. “I am double-majoring in Marketing, Media and Communications. I chose to major in these two subjects so my education would assist me with my career,” he said.

With gender-based violence and social issues affecting his native country of Zimbabwe, VOE has planned on releasing a song focusing on those issues. “The song is tilted Handirevi Nhema (English translation: I tell no lies). The record speaks about different sensitive social issues like saying NO to gender-based violence, the situation in Zimbabwe, and encouraging self-love among women,” he explained, adding that he has been planning on releasing such a song for the past two years, and is excited to have finally put the idea to life.

“With God’s plan and timing, I believe this is the perfect time to release this song. It is an Afro-pop song with a very contemporary sound. The release date is yet to be announced on my social media accounts,” he concluded.
