Join FSRA in cleaning up Florida for World Cleanup Day 2020

In an ideal world, everyone would be proud of the community within which they live. However, that is not always the case.

World Cleanup Day is a global initiative which aims to raise awareness of the various problems caused by mismanaged waste.

In an ideal world, everyone would be proud of the community within which they live. However, that is not always the case. Illegal dumping and a lack of respect for public spaces can make many beautiful areas seem like rubbish dumps.

Last year, 180 countries participated in this initiative, collecting a total of 100 000 tons of waste. This year is your chance to get involved and take part in this amazing initiative, sharing the mantra, “One day. One planet. One goal”. While the official World Cleanup Day is on 19 September, you can join the Florida South Residents Association (FSRA) one day later to help make Florida a cleaner, safer community.

On Sunday, 20 September, FSRA will be cleaning 5th and 6th Avenue in Florida, and are encouraging residents to join in on the initiative. The cleanup will start at 10am and the more helping hands there are the better. If you are willing to volunteer a little bit of your time to help make Florida a community its residents can be proud of, the meeting place for the cleanup is Constantia Bakery (15 Kathleen Street, Florida) at 9.45am.

Rodney Churchyard, Chairperson of the FSRA said there are well-outlined plans that the Residents Association will be implementing to make sure that everyone in attendance is in line with the coronavirus safety regulations. Volunteers will be split into groups and will tackle specific tasks on specific parts of each of the two streets to make sure that everyone is abiding by the social-distancing regulations and are remaining as safe as possible.

The FSRA will have sanitizer at the cleanup, but volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and sanitizer to ensure that everyone is as safe as possible. Rodney has also asked that anyone who is able to assist with brooms, spades, rakes, and other tools that can be used to help with the cleanup to please bring them along.

If you are able to help with these tools, or would like more information on the cleanup, contact Rodney on 082 700 9454.
