A ceremonial unshackling from the perceived oppression of the school system, 40-days celebrations are seen by some as an acceptable right of passage. Others may disagree as they have the potential to escalate into dangerous and scarring incidents.
A video has been circulating of matric learners engaging in celebratory shenanigans as their time to write their final exams and hang up their school uniforms forever draws near. One scene shows the improper use of a municipal refuse bin to impeded the progress of a motorist, and the second the always tempting, yet illegal, discharge of a fire extinguisher.
Both scenarios have potentially damaging consequence and the Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that the incidents have been dealt with. “Incidents of disruptions happened at the school premises and the surrounding suburb. All culprits were identified, the situation was managed and all went back to normal. Parents were notified and the necessary disciplinary process will take place accordingly,” confirmed spokesperson Steve Mabona.
Finishing school is one of the milestones of any person’s life and restrain is perhaps a characteristic learned later in life. That said, some may be thankful that smartphones equipped with high definition cameras were not common 20 years ago.
