Young photographer captures imaginations

The further relaxation of the lockdown regulations by government has given a young local entrepreneur the opportunity to implement the ideas he developed during the harsh days of the pandemic.
While at the beginning the restrictions had the Roodepoort-based photographer, Mbongo Keswa, grounded for a while, the smart youngster did not let the impact derail his mission to grow. Instead he used the period for self-growth and reflection on the industry as he aimed for a big comeback.

“I usually draw my inspiration from structures I come across as well as themes such as Heritage Month, love or even gender-based violence,” he said.

When asked what sets him apart from other photographers, Mbongo said that it’s the dramatic effects he uses on his photoshoots as well the ability to balance lighting in order to produce a mind-blowing picture.
“Because my work speaks for itself, I managed to secure constant income from my bookings last year, but Covid-19 happened this year – forcing me to stay at home, losing my income as a result,” he said about his hardship.
Because after the storm every cloud has a silver lining, this big dreamer told the Record that he used the time to shape his career by strategising and learning new business models to grow his flourishing business.
“I didn’t want to sit at home and be miserable; so I decided to apply my mind to be productive. I also started shopping for new equipment to fully equip myself, extending my services and also looking to empower budding photographers,” he explained.
As he aims for the stars, international photographer Xavier Saer is who he looks up to. The renowned photographer, famous for his amazing celebrity takes, also happens to be Mbongo’s mentor.
Speaking of long-term goals, the Groblerpark resident, who has also worked with leading fashion designers such as Adda Kouture, told the Record that he plans to take his craft international, touch base with local brands and contract influencers and celebrities to be their personal photographers in what he would calls the MK Experience.
Mbongo currently trades as MK LENS (PTY) LTD. Use @mklens_photography to follow him on Instagram.
