Rape survivors invited to exhibit ‘what they were wearing’
This NPO without boundaries is set to host a rather unusual exhibition in Braamfontein where they invite rape survivors to exhibit what they were wearing on the day of their regrettable ordeal.
After hosting a charity drive that aimed to cater to both genders affected by gender-based violence in Zandspruit recently, the Free World Initiative has embarked on another project involving rape survivors.
This time this NPO without boundaries is set to host a rather unusual exhibition in Braamfontein where they invite rape survivors to exhibit what they were wearing on the day of their regrettable ordeal.
Free World Initiative representative, Tahirah Jegels explained the purpose of this unique campaign they called ‘what I was wearing’. “Victims of rape are often asked ‘what were you wearing’, which triggers the notion that the responsibility is placed solely on the victims to keep themselves safe, instead of looking at the real issue,” she expressed.
“Rape is a sign of a sick society that wants to turn a blind eye to the injustice we are facing,” Tahirah said.
“Free World Initiative calls on survivors to share what they were wearing the day they were raped, to be displayed at the Kalashnikovv Gallery at 70 Juta Street in Braamfontein next month,” she extended the invite.
The event will be held on 28 November from 10am. The deadline for handing in all the clothing items is 15 November.
