Roodepoort CPF Youth Desk take to the streets to fight GBV

The long-term success of the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) will depend on the attitudes of the youth. The future leaders of society have an opportunity to educate their peers and set an example for generations to come.
The Roodepoort Community Policing Forum (CPF) Youth Desk took to the streets on 25 September to show their commitment to fighting the scourge of GBV. With the Heritage Day feeling still lingering in the air, the Youth Desk members also emphasised the need to celebrate our unique cultures every day. Armed with placards and youthful energy, the band of young leaders paraded the streets of the CBD.

A highlight of the day was the groups of traditional dancers, made up of the very demographic most in need of protection. The groups of young girls proudly dancing in their customary gear displayed the talent, energy and potential that need to be cherished and harnessed to propel the nation forward.
The CPF Youth Desk is run by Nicolaas Legkau and he takes pride in the efforts his charges make with few resources. “Can you believe we never got any help from anyone, we did this from our own pockets,” he said. The Youth Desk is a voluntary structure but they fight tirelessly to promote youth involvement through clean-ups, anti-drug awareness campaigns and events such as this.
