#18GirlChild celebrates first birthday in style

Not one to rest on her laurels, Layla pushes onward in her never-ending fight to ensure that no girl should miss an opportunity because of a lack of female sanitary products.

The passing of time gives one regular moments of reflection and introspection. Should the resilience and foresight of the youth be in doubt, look no further than the #18GirlChild initiative.

One year ago Layla Mohamed chose to sacrifice the spotlight on her 18th birthday and instead shine that light on the plight of girls less fortunate. Since then she has touched the lives of every individual she has come into contact with and provided in excess of 1 000 female hygiene products for teenage girls who lack the necessary resources. Now, she can look back with pride at the foundation she has laid.

Not one to rest on her laurels, Layla pushes onward in her never-ending fight to ensure that no girl should miss an opportunity because of a lack of female sanitary products. In preparation for her 19th birthday and the launch of her Glamour Gear Kits, Layla held a drive-through drop-off day at Liberty Church Discovery, 29 August.

Gabrielle Malgas, Liberty Church Head Youth Minister was full of praise, saying, “It is an amazing initiative. Layla hasn’t let any obstacles get in her way. The example she is setting for the rest of us is incredible.” Pastor Ashley Augustine came all the way from the church’s Midrand branch to support, saying, “We all just love her giving heart”.

Less than a month later and after adding some glamour with a brand-new hairdo, Layla was at Newton House School to spread her message to their learners. “This was a huge success. #18Girlchild was asked to do a motivational and educational speech to Grade 6s and 7s, and the girls were asked to bring sanitary care products as part of the day,” beamed Layla.

Calm, composed and wise beyond her years, the humanitarian firecracker will have many more opportunities to celebrate the coming milestones. From that humble gesture the seeds of an empire have been sown and true to form, the fruits that are borne will be shared for the benefit of all.
