From selling masks to owning a business

The risk he took to move around Roodepoort during intense lockdown to deliver his masks to his clients paid off into something bigger today.

Local designer, Bongani Bomax Nyathi, has proven to be the epitome of grabbing an opportunity and running with it.

Bomax, as he is commonly known around Honeydew, was one of the few designers in the area, if not the only one, to make masks from fabric, and sold them at low prices to retirement villages and households during the early days of Covid-19.

Nyathi, whose job used to be to design leather bags, jumped at the opportunity to design washable masks when the demand for them was high, especially while the disposable ones were unreasonably expensive for many.

He said the relationships and partnerships he had forged landed him a big investment.

“One of my clients who bought more than 500 masks during lockdown was very pleased with my work. I maintained a good relationship with them, which saw them helping us financially to open our own formal business,” he said.
