Roodepoort women raise a ‘cuppa’ to cancer survivors
While some entrants went for a more elegant approach when decorating their bras, others went all out making them as funny as they could, making the perfect ice breakers for any conversation.
For the past 15 years, the Lions Club of Wilro Park has been hosting a CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) fundraiser that is the perfect excuse of anyone to binge on cupcakes and coffee.
The Cuppa for CANSA initiative is hosted annually during October to spread cancer awareness and collect funds for the CANSA West Rand branch. Members of both the Wilro Park and Krugersdorp Lions Clubs were joined by community members to host a tea party like no other.

The Lions Club House in Roodekrans was decorated to the nines; pink, purple and white decorations adorned walls and tables, and each table setting was complemented by delicious baked goods and treats. The most interesting part of the decorations were the entries for the ‘Pimp Your Bra’ competition that was held. Women were asked to decorate a bra and bring it along for a chance to win a special ‘Booby Prize’, and the entries did not disappoint.
While some entrants went for a more elegant approach when decorating their bras, others went all out making them as funny as they could, making the perfect ice breakers for any conversation. Another conversation starter was a few of the male Lions dressed in rainbow-coloured tutus, spreading laughs and helping ensure that the day ran smoothly. The loud chatter and laughs, and the inviting atmosphere made everyone feel welcome.

Reinette Herbst, Mrs Africa 2019 and first princess for Mrs Transcontinental, started the morning off by delivering an empowering motivational speech to the women about never giving up, and the importance of positive thoughts and practicing uplifting speech in their daily lives, such as: “I am a cancer survivor,” instead of “I have cancer”.
Ester Pretorius from CANSA West Rand was also in attendance, clad in elegant pink clothes and a beautiful smile. “I am so grateful that the Lions do this for us every year,” said Ester. “This year has been exceedingly difficult for CANSA, so events like this with such amazing people are a gift.”

There were several raffles that the women could enter, with the money from the ticket sales (as well as the entry fee) going towards CANSA and other Lions projects. Tickets could be purchased for any raffle that caught the guests’ eyes, including a coffee and chocolate hamper, a pamper hamper, nail vouchers, jewellery and so many more.
It was a day filled with positive energy, upliftment, community spirit, smiles, and fantastic food; a success on all fronts.
