Spring Road bridge opened finally, but not ceremoniously

This bridge was closed in 2017 when its integrity could not be guaranteed after being damaged by heavy downpours.

Having been closed for almost four years, an upgraded Spring Road bridge in Weltevreden Park was officially opened to traffic and pedestrians on Tuesday, 20 October.

While the handover of the road to the City was expected to be done ceremoniously with formalities, ribbon cuttings and cheers, instead the opening was as dull as a funeral since officials cancelled their attendance at the last minute.

The project’s community liaison officer (CLO) Quinton Zulu confirmed the disappointing opening by citing that engineers pitched up to open the road but had to leave since the event was abruptly cancelled.

Ward 126 councillor David Brand has previously commended the contractor, WHBO, for this sterling job citing that the road across the new bridge will help alleviate traffic and in the fight against criminality in the area.
