Celebrate the festive season by volunteering

Fred & Martie's Soup Kitchen has been helping underprivileged members of the Roodepoort community since 1977.

The Festive Season is drawing nearer, and after a year with so much struggle (both financially and emotionally) the best way to get into the Christmas spirit is giving back to your community.

Fred & Martie’s Soup Kitchen has been helping underprivileged members of the Roodepoort community since 1977. As is tradition for the non-profit organisation (NPO), they are inviting community members to volunteer their hands and hearts for their two annual Christmas Parties. While they do have a wish list for the Santa’s Shoebox Gifts and for supplies for the parties, Yolindie Oberholzer (co-owner of the organisation) said that the main thing they are looking for is volunteers.

Yolindie and her husband Riaan are asking community members to come forward and donate their hearts and hands by volunteering to spread joy this Christmas season. The soup kitchen has given the parties the theme, A Trip Down Candy Cane Lane … Enjoying a Sweet, Sweet Christmas. Therefore, they have also dubbed the vulnerable children and elderly community members they will be helping, Candy Cane Angels.

The Elderly’s Christmas Party will be held on 28 November, and the Children’s Christmas Party will be held on 5 December. To abide by social-distancing regulations, each party will be held outside with a hoard of precautions in place.

If you are able to donate your time for one of these parties, contact Yolindie and Riaan on 082 854 6904 or 082 786 8517. Emails can also be sent to Yolindie@sopkombuis.com.

The Children’s Party alone caters for 579 children, so any donation goes a long way. If you are unable to give your time, the organisation is also looking for party decorations, items for their Christmas gift packs, and food and drink items for each of the parties. “For a child living in poverty, a Christmas gift signifies hope. It reminds them that they are loved!” said Yolindie. This non-profit organisation (NPO) is Section 21 certified, and can therefore issue IT18A certificates for tax deductions on financial donations they receive.
