Motorists reminded to drive cautiously after spate of weekend accidents
Poor road surfaces, heavy rains and driver error were the cause of several accidents this past weekend with two noticeable incidents standing out.
As the festive season approaches and the desire to celebrate the end of 2020 takes over, motorists are urged to consider their fellow road users and the potential dangers of reckless driving.
Poor road surfaces, heavy rains and driver error were the cause of several accidents this past weekend with two noticeable incidents standing out. At roughly 4pm on Friday afternoon, 30 October, two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Albertina Sisulu Road in Maraisburg.
A 47-year-old man was extricated from his vehicle after paramedics found him stuck behind his steering wheel. He was rushed to Helen Joseph Hospital with multiple serious injuries and the two occupants of the other vehicle were also treated at the same facility for minor to moderate injuries.
Then, in a horrific high-speed collision on Sunday afternoon, three men lost their lives on Hendrick Potgieter Road just before the JG Strydom Road bridge. Paramedics arrived to the sight of a mangled blue BMW strewn across the centre island. The force of the impact was so great that the engine was dislodged from the engine bay and, sadly, the three occupants were declared dead by the paramedics on scene.
The incidents come as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by speed and lack of concentration when driving. Various campaigns are run throughout the year to warn and educate drivers on proper road etiquette but ultimately the responsibility lies with the driver.
