Alleged fraudster arrested for selling fake medical certificates

Officers proceeded to Florida and conducted an observation that led to the arrest of the male suspect.

Fraudulent behaviour is nothing new for the citizens of South Africa; opportunists target desperate or unsuspecting people who often come out of the situation with the short end of the stick.

On the morning of Friday, 30 October, one of these opportunists was apprehended and arrested near the Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) in Florida. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Undercover officers (IIOC) received complaints one day earlier relating to people selling fake medical certificates in the area.

Officers proceeded to Florida and conducted an observation that led to the arrest of the male suspect. JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said the man was selling fake medical certificates for new, and renewed professional driving permit applications. At the time of his arrest he was in possession of medical documents and a stamp that belonged to a medical practitioner.

The Johannesburg District Police Commissioner confirmed that the 46-year-old suspect was detained at the Florida Police Station and had appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.
