Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester has expressed her disappointment in the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for showing no desire to fix pothole-riddled roads despite the intervention of private businesses in her ward.
“Our ward contributes handsomely to the City’s purse and it’s important to me that we get our fair share of capital expenditure, and that operational expenditure covers our basic needs. Sadly, residents now have to fill potholes themselves. Next, we’ll probably have to find a way to deal with refuse removal,” she lamented.
She went on to touch on the costs incurred by a Residents Association and security company to repair the damaged roads.
Dave Baxter, the Chairperson of the Panorama Residents Association is not sure of how many potholes they filled, but spent R3 414.80 on 875kg of asphalt. EC Security hired and operated the stamper at their own expense.
Following the community-driven task, Amelia had a question for JRA. “So JRA does not even have R4 000 to fill potholes within the ward, where one of my resident’s monthly rates and taxes bill accounts for that amount?” she asked.
This is a developing story.
