One thing that former City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba tried to achieve besides clean governance was to instil activism through community clean-up campaigns.
A Re Sebetseng was the concept he initiated, which saw officials and residents team up every last weekend of the month to improve the cleanliness and safety of their communities.
This half-forgotten concept is likely to be revived by members of Mashaba’s newly formed party, ActionSA.
Watch here:
Geared in green and white party T-shirts, a handful of members descended on the informal taxi rank at the Hendrik Potgieter Road and Makro/ Clearwater intersection on Saturday, 21 November, to activate the residents by reminding them about the importance of a clean environment.
Although few in numbers, the members made a significant impact which saw some taxi operators joining in and helping to clean their workspace.
The Ward 97 campaign manager Catherine Matjila further enlightened the Northsider about the campaign.

“We realised that there are lots of taxis and commuters on this intersection daily, and this path remains very dirty, so we took it upon ourselves as ActionSA to come together to activate the community to clean up after themselves by showing them it’s necessary to keep the environment clean at all times,” she explained.
With the intersection being extremely busy, the members also used the opportunity to promote Mashaba’s brand by handing out pamphlets highlighting the party’s policy framework.

More of ActionSA members are expected to be seen in a number of areas in a continued effort to get communities active.
