Florida South Residents Association cleans up section of Albertina Sisulu Road

The clean-up doubled as a food collection day for Themba na Mandla/Centre of Hope and Strength.

Dark clouds and a cold breeze created damp conditions for Florida South Residents Association’s (FSRA) last clean-up of 2020. Despite the weather’s lack of cooperation, community groups came out in numbers to do their part for the suburb’s beautification.

The section of Albertina Sisulu Road around the intersection of 9th Avenue was teeming with high-visibility jackets, garden tools and flashing lights, Saturday 21 November. Guarded by members of Help24 Secure, FSRA shovelled streets and filled bags with litter in an attempt to show pride in the presentation of their streets.

The clean-up doubled as a food collection day for Themba na Mandla/Centre of Hope and Strength. Officially founded in January 2019, Keith and Aaaqeelah Chetty have been guiding recovering addicts on their path to a more balanced life for over three years. Attendees of the clean-up brought canned goods and non-perishables for the Florida-based wellness centre.

Help24 Secure brought along a full staff complement to assist the clean-up, and keep a watchful eye over proceedings. “A big thanks to the community for coming out to support us and thanks to the community for letting us support them. We also want to wish everyone a happy and safe festive season,” said Help24 Secure CEO, Chris Diederiks.

Chief organiser and FSRA crusader, Rodney Churchyard, was as pleased as ever with the turnout. “We would like to thank all that came out on Saturday and made this community clean-up such a success. A special thanks has to go to Keith and his eager and willing young men who did most of the work,” praised Rodney.

Efforts may be finished for the calendar year but no doubt the fight against grime and litter will step up a gear in 2021.
