Councillors warn against illegal dumping outside compost site

During his site visit on Tuesday, 26 January, the councillor was met with household items and rubbish outside the entrance, which he suspected had been dumped overnight.

Ward 126 councillor David Brand has pleaded with the residents to play their part and be responsible citizens.

This after Brand expressed his disgust over the illegal dumping crisis unfolding outside the closed old Panorama Compost Site in Allen’s Nek.

During his site visit on Tuesday, 26 January, the councillor was met with household items and rubbish outside the entrance, which he suspected had been dumped overnight.
“There was a full lounge suite, a child’s dollhouse and probably four bakkie loads of rubbish that appeared in the last 48 hours. This now gives the poor security guard more work and he has to drag all the rubbish inside, which leaves the entrance looking like a rubbish dump,” he criticised.

To simplify things for the residents, Brand reminded the community about a Pikitup service to get rid of old furniture.
“Pikitup has a bulky service which is available to the public once a month free of charge. They will come and collect your unwanted lounge suite, fridge and other appliances that are too big to dispose of yourself,” he appealed.

According to Pikitup, households are urged to contact their nearest Pikitup depot or use the nearest garden sites in their proximity. Once a resident has logged a call at any of the Pikitup depots, the responsible Depot Manager will book a call and arrange for a once a month free bulky waste removal service.

Failure to comply, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), Councillor Mpho Moerane warned that JMPD will patrol the area and impose fines on the lawless individuals.

“We will be engaging JMPD to patrol the area and we will also inform security on site to take photographs of vehicles that are dumping, and ensure that they are arrested or fined,” he warned.
