Bigger relief plans for Zandspruit this year

Five Tiger Foundation, a non-profit organisation focusing on community relief projects within the Zandspruit informal settlement, has hit the ground running to ensure that they upscale their offerings to cater to the marginalised community’s needs.

Dumisani Tshabalala, co-founder and chairperson of the organisation, together with his team have started inquiring about funding to bolster their initiatives. They have identified a great need in the informal settlement due to the effects of Covid-19 and unemployment.

“Poverty levels are expected to increase in Zandspruit because of Covid-19, but as an NGO we decided to upscale our programmes, working with our partners to cater to the community. We’ve also started sending out proposals and applying for funding in order to make an impact in the community,” Tshabalala shared their strategy.

At inception, the foundation funded its projects with a minimum of R50 contributions from its volunteers – hence the name of the NGO, as ‘Five tiger’ is a slang term for R50.
However, for the purpose of sustenance, the chairperson told Northsider that they had to review this concept and adapt to other modern funding models.

“Our co-funding strategy still exists, which enables community members to get involved in the solution; however, more partners with big budgets were approached to cater for our programmes at a larger scale,” he explained.
Speaking of successful partnerships, before Christmas, Five Tiger partnered with the Kirsty Watts Foundation which donated much-needed presents and grocery packs to over 200 children.
“The Kirsty Watts Foundation brought Santa and bikers with them. This was a wonderful gesture and experience for the children who will forever cherish that day,” he reflected.
