Men and women in blue thanked for selflessness and bravery
“All we can do is hope and pray that all our colleagues and family members are safe, and can continue performing the excellent duties in their communities and the greater population of South Africa.”
Being a police officer is a dangerous and thankless job, although they are driven by a calling and surely deserve the community’s gratitude.
While everybody enjoys the relative security and comfort of their homes, the officers in blue brave all kinds of danger to make sure that all are and feel safe.
National Police Day, celebrated annually on 27 January is an important day on the South African Police Services’ (SAPS) calendar to highlight police achievements throughout the year, and to remember the heroes and heroines who passed away in the line of duty.
The Northsider visited our local police station and had a chat with Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan who voiced his concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic.
“National Police Day is celebrated throughout the country by all police officers to commemorate even those who have fallen. Due to unforeseen circumstances, as we know what’s happening to our country at the moment, police officers and their families are fighting Covid-19, and it is sad that they cannot come together and celebrate National Police Day. All we can do is hope and pray that all our colleagues and family members are safe, and can continue performing the excellent duties in their communities and the greater population of South Africa,” said Captain Muthan.
Honeydew CPF Deputy Chairperson, Jon Rosenberg and PRO for Honeydew, Michael Steyn also expressed their gratitude towards the local police and thanked them for their commitment within the community.
“On this day we commemorate our members in blue and honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their community. I think this year in particular has been difficult with the pandemic, and we have lost many members as a result of this. One often hears of complaints and negative feedback about the police, but as one who works very closely with them, let me assure you that there are many dedicated and hardworking members who put their lives on the line for us daily,” said Jon.
According to National Police Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, police resources are useless if they are not utilised and managed optimally by the police officials.
“It is important to remember the sacrifice the police have made for us and continue to make for us, though we have lost many members in the line of duty. We just want to thank them for the way they are dealing with Covid-19; it’s not easy for them to be out there and be exposed on a daily basis. We as the CPF are saying thank you to the guys for making a difference out there,” said Michael.
