JMPD Chaplain’s funeral held at Roodepoort City Hall
Dr Ngwenya had been with JMPD since 1 June 2006, playing an integral role as the Chief Chaplain, ministering at important events.
It was a sad occasion on Saturday, 20 March when the late Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) Chief Chaplain Dr Phinda Ngwenya was given his final send-off at the Roodepoort City Hall. He later was laid to rest at Westpark Cemetery.
JMPD, friends and family gathered at the Covid-19 compliant venue to pay their last respects to Dr Ngwenya in a service that saw speakers and colleagues reflect on a life that was well lived.

The JMPD choir sang hymns that filled the room with gospel rhythmic elements, prompting mourners to join in to celebrate Dr Ngwenya’s life.
Dr Ngwenya had been with JMPD since 1 June 2006, playing an integral role as the Chief Chaplain, ministering at important events, memorial services and funerals of officials who passed on and off duty – not only in the Department, but also in the City of Johannesburg.
He fell ill in January and was in and out of hospital. He passed away on 16 March. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.

The MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Mally Mokoena, has expressed her shock and sadness at Dr Ngwenya’s untimely passing.
“This is truly a great loss not only to the Department but also the City of Johannesburg in its entirety. I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“His legacy will forever live on in the hearts and memories of everyone whose lives he touched and changed.
“Dr Ngwenya played a pivotal role in providing support to members of the Department in their time of need. His passing has left a gaping wound in our hearts,” MMC Mokoena said.
