Empowerment programme giving back identity of Davidsonville women
Synergistic Covenant Network and Footpath Development Trust turn raw materials into profit.
The sweat and strain of labour builds not only value but self worth, purpose and confidence.
Since the turn of the year Synergistic Covenant Network NPO, in conjunction with Footpath Development Trust, has been hard at work stitching together plastic and nylon pairs of self-pride. Led by Footpath’s head facilitator, Rebecca Kubatsi, 12 ladies began a shoe crocheting course that not only helps them learn a new skill, but gives them the tangible reward of function and profit.

The group of budding seamstresses collected their course completion certificates on Tuesday, 16 March, and will now look to sell their items to fellow community members. Female empowerment is close to Rebecca’s heart, knowing the benefits are more than just material.
“Independence can change your life forever. You can be your own boss with your own money and these skills can be passed on to friends and family” said Rebecca.
For 20 years, Rebecca has worked with soles and canvas. She spent 10 years with shoe-repair franchise, Multiserv, before spending the last decade with Footpath. “It means a lot to be able to train these women and to give them the skills that can help them build a better life,” said Rebecca. The container of materials, donated by the charity’s various sponsors, costs less than R400, and makes four pairs of custom-designed and decorated footwear.

Synergistic’s Ellery Booth deeply understands the struggles facing her community but envisions one that is positively self-reliant, thriving on its own inventiveness. “We need to start entrepreneurship programmes so that people can stop relying on government. There is a strong spirit of entitlement, and people won’t do anything if they just sit waiting for a handout. It is about encouraging a mindset change,” said Ellery.

Synergistic will now be absorbing Footpath into their NPO and will continue the programme with Rebecca’s help. They also have the long-term goal of establishing an agricultural network in Davidsonville which incorporates backyards and the transformation of an unsightly nearby illegal dumpsite. Work is under way and with the right attitude, the fruits of their labour can feed the community’s potential.
