Oribi Street disaster far from over

Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester, who has been spearheading discussions to find solutions to the crisis, elaborated on what she has learnt so far.

Residents in the vicinity of Oribi Street in Constantia Kloof who have been plagued by underground water eroding the road infrastructure might have to wait a little longer before the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) appoints a contractor.

Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester, who has been spearheading discussions to find solutions to the crisis, elaborated on what she has learnt so far.

“Residents in the Oribi Street vicinity must be advised as per information received from JRA, that once a contractor has been appointed, the road will be rehabilitated and further drains constructed,” she said.

Residents barricaded Oribi Street in February after the tar pushed up because of the underground stream, and was declared unsafe for motorists after a taxi got stuck in the constantly muddy surface.

As residents were forced to use rocks and tied emergency tape to sticks to close off the road as a precaution, it seems that this situation isn’t expected to change anytime soon.

Amelia indicated that in the interim there are no road signs available to warn of the danger ahead, and the makeshift posters which residents put up will remain in place.
