The Department of Health announced that South Africans 60 years or older can register online to to be administered the Covid-19 vaccine. They can register online for the vaccine using a smartphone, tablet or computer, and once the registration has been completed, an SMS will be sent confirming the registration. An additional SMS will be sent to give details of the date and venue of the vaccination.
This is part of the department’s efforts to vaccinate the most vulnerable to Covid-19, starting with essential workers and the elderly. On 19 April, South Africa’s total number of infections stood at 1 567 513 positive cases, 1 490 876 recoveries and 53 757 deaths. Thus far 292 623 doses of the vaccine have been administered.
But will members of the local community signing up to receive the vaccine when the time comes?
“I don’t know. We’ll see. I will not be taking the vaccine. This is just like flue, you get it and it’s over with. I know people who had Covid for a few days and came out okay.” – Stanley Bester.“It’s a good thing to help build immunity and get people protected. People already get the flu shot yearly, so why not get the Covid vaccine? If the opportunity is there, take it with both hands.” – Brenda Grewar, Pharmacist“I am scared of the vaccine because people are saying it has side-effects. I just don’t know and I am really confused because there is so much information circulating on WhatsApp and all those sites.” – Beauty Ndlovu“I am very wary because it came out of nowhere. If it starts helping people and I see the positive effects, then I will consider getting it but right now, It is still so new. It would be fantastic if it did help,” – Nathan Janse
